Selectmen agree to abide by code of conduct

By Phyllis Booth

A discussion related to the board of selectmen code of conduct continued at the Jan. 23 meeting of the board, with selectman Edith Morgan accusing selectman Jon Fudeman of talking around town or to town hall staff about issues that should be brought to the board. The code of conduct issue was first raised by Morgan at the Jan. 17 meeting of the board.

Morgan maintained that board needs to “do things as a team.”

Fudeman said he has no problem with that, but said people have a difference of opinion which seems to go to financial matters. “I read the policy and don’t see anything where I violated anything,” said Fudeman. “I believe honest debate is good.”

“I don’t like you doing things outside of the board of selectmen and talking to other people,” said Morgan.

“I tend not to disagree unless I feel it’s important,” said Fudeman.

“I will remain cognizant of the code and meet it,” said select board chairman Stan Moss.

Morgan and Fudeman said they would do the same.

In other business, Fudeman said he wanted to have a financial review discussion regarding the two articles he wants to propose at town meeting.

“I want to know where you are going with that before we schedule a discussion,” said Moss. That discussion was scheduled for Feb. 27.

Selectmen also agreed to a letter of support for the Open Space Committee regarding a DCR Trails Grant. Open Space Committee member Karen Rossow said there would be at least a 20 percent town match required for a grant.

That match can be met with in-kind services such as volunteers clearing trails, said Moss.

“We have $16,000 worth of volunteer hours,” said Rossow. “We can apply for the grant for materials, volunteers will do the work.”

Selectmen also voted to send a letter of support for a DCR Trails Grant for Wachusett Greenways.

Selectmen agreed to ask Montachusett Regional Planning Commission to conduct a traffic and speed count on Merriam Rd. in February and do another one after a snow storm when there is likely to be more ski traffic. Merriam Rd. is used as a cut through to get to Mountain Road to the ski area.
