Sterling man dies on hiking trail

Nicholas Bull, 24, of Sterling, died Aug. 3 while on a hiking trip with two friends in the Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas.

The three men ran out of water during a hike along the Marufo Vega Trail on a day when temperatures were topping 100 degrees, the park’s acting superintendent David Elkowitz said.

One man hiked out to find help and a search was launched by Park Rangers and U.S. Border Patrol agents. Bull’s second companion was able to hike back to safety.

After a two-and-a-half-hour search, searchers located Bull near the trail. He was deceased when the search team found him.

There was no indication of foul play, Elkowitz said. An autopsy was planned.

Deaths in the Big Bend National Park are relatively rare, Elkowitz said, occurring perhaps once every several years.
